Almost like home...

After a particularly long week that included me getting ANOTHER cold I decided that Chris should take me out for dinner. I called him around 10:30 in the morning to share my decision. The conversation went like this...

Me: Hello, You need to make reservations.
Him: I do? Why?
Me: Because I took the time to look cute today... really cute. And it's Friday.
Him: Okay

I love my hubby!
After a crab cake with mango salsa, a 12 oz USDA sirloin with crispy onions, garlic green beans and cottage chips and a chocolate fondant cake with vanilla ice cream at The Palm, I REALLY love my hubby!
Nothing like an American style steak dinner with a bottle of Sonoma Pinot Noir to take care of my nagging homesickness!!!

Heaven on a bun...

Otherwise known as Lucky Seven.
Several months ago Chris and I read/heard about a place in Notting Hill that was supposed to have great burgers. A few months later we figured out the name of the place, Lucky Seven, and a few months after that I found it while working. It took me about a week to convince Chris it was 'close' and we could walk there for dinner. We went for the 1st time the day after Michael Jackson died... random I know... and enjoyed bacon cheese burgers with french fries, milk shakes and the MJ catalog rockin' in the background. It was Y U M M Y!!! We ate so much that it was painful to walk home and we both had to undo the top button on our jeans... but we vowed to return and do it again.
Yesterday, we met our friend Tim at the Great British Beer Festival for some good ol' fashion beer drinking... err tasting ;-) After what felt like 30 minutes but turned out to be about 4 hours at the festival, nothing sounded better than a big fat American style bacon cheese burger with beer battered onion rings and a cookies-n- cream extra thick milk shake.
Life is good.

Taste of London

On Friday night, Chris and I headed to Regent's Park to get our eat on at the Taste of London! The weather was less than perfect but it wasn't raining and the wind was pretty tame so I would call it acceptable... beggars can't be choosers, right ;-)
We were both starving by the time we weaved our way through the crowds... so we waisted as little time as possible identifying our targets: Asia de Cuba, Hereford Road, Mango Tree, Bumpkin and anything that struck our fancy along the way!
I have been wanting to try Bumpkin for a few months... the slogan pretty much describes us perfectly!
Best chicken pot pie, ever!

I almost lost Chris at the grilling demo. He was mesmerized by the flames and drooling over the salmon! I think he misses his grill :-(
Poor guy!!! An outdoor space is a must have for our next flat!!

This display was from The Blue Elephant, the Thai restaurant we visited while on our honeymoon in 2004. Great Thai food but their real speciality is the presentation... our entire meal was accompanied by carved goodies! We watched a lady carve a carrot into a flower... amazing skill! I would surely slice my fingers off.

Chris trout from Hereford Road was 100 times better than my rabbit... and I don't even like fish! I was disappointed in Hereford Road after hearing such good things about it... oh well... you win some, you lose some.
No pictures of the deserts... they were gone before I could even think to take out my camera! If anyone is planning to visit London in the next summer, I would highly recommend timing the trip to coincide with the TOL!!!

Cafe Espana and the Uninvited Dinner Guest

A few weeks ago while Chris was in NYC I went to dinner with a friend, Tim. I did a quick google search for a tapas restaurant and found a place with decent reviews. Cafe Espana is just a few blocks from Piccadilly Circus and has been around for several years so I figured it would be decent... what I did not account for was having a third mouth to feed!

Tim and I were just about finished with our meal when I spotted something out of the corner of my eye. I turned my head to the left to check it out and didn't see anything. I chalked it up to nothing and continued my meal. Then I noticed the guys at the table a few feet from us looking in the same direction and laughing. I looked again and there it was... a mouse. Now, I will admit that it was a tiny little thing. However, I think we can all agree that no matter the size of the mouse, we don't want it running across our feet while we are eating dinner! And yes, it ran across my feet.

My immediate reaction was to scream and jump up on the table. Some how I managed to suppress this desire and instead I quickly made my way for the exit. I didn't bother to take my coat or purse, I just left. On my way out, I ran into the manager and suggested to him that he check out the tiny rodent that was wrecking my night out. His response was to follow me outside to gather more detail. Apparently, "There is a mouse under my table" along with me pointing directly at my table was not enough detail for him to take action! He brought a Laotian busboy with him to gather intel. Once he was sure he understood the situation he said "Don't worry he will take care of it. Where he is from they eat things like mice." I had a mental image of the smiley little busboy catching the mouse and then cooking him up in the Cafe Espana kitchen!

Once I had gathered my senses and reduced the bright red blush in my cheeks I returned to the table. Tim was kind enough not to laugh at me but we did share a laugh when the manager came back to the table. He brought us a pitcher of sangria to apologize for our dinner guest and then pointed out this was the first time he had seen a mouse so small. Tim and I immediately thought the same thing... they must usually have larger mice or perhaps even rats running around during dinner! Although we were ready to call it a night we felt obligated to finish the free sangria. The mouse continued to run around the restaurant and torment the diners. Every few minutes we hear someone gasp or see someone quickly whipping their feet off the floor in response to the visitor. The busboy diligently chased the mouse around with a cloth napkin. I couldn't help but cringe every timeI saw the napkin grace the floor or the mouse but resigned myself to accepting that Cafe Espana was not exactly concerned about health code.

Needless to say, I won't be returning to Cafe Espana anytime soon!

Let them eat...Crumpets.

I made a promise to my grandfather's lovely wife when we first moved that I would hunt down some crumpets and let her know what they are and how they taste. Well, yesterday when I was shopping for English Muffins... incidentally, these are just called muffins here... I came across nothing other than crumpets! So with Norma on my mind, I settled in for a nice traditional English meal this morning... crumpets and coffee. Okay, so the coffee was not so traditional but let's face it tea just doesn't get the brain moving in the morning like coffee.

The crumpets were very good. They were a cross between English muffins and sponge cake... crispy on the top and spongy in the middle. I toasted them and topped them with butter and English honey. Delicious! I think I will have them for breakfast tomorrow, too!
